Making Education Count was the theme for the 2007 Walk. As in Canada, parents in the developing world want high quality education for their children. They understand that education is the best investment in their child’s future. But in many parts of the world, fewer than half of children have a place in a classroom, teachers are underpaid and overwhelmed by large class sizes, and girls are often not given the chance to study. AKFC-supported programs take a holistic approach, strengthening educational institutions as well as nurturing the individual child. Example In East Africa, governments are struggling to meet commitments to provide universal primary education. Tuition has been abolished in public schools, but classrooms are over-crowded and lack textbooks, teachers are over-worked and lack adequate training, and students are dropping out before graduation. Smart Solution The Professional Development Centre program is responding to the urgent need to strengthen the education infrastructure in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda by certifying new teachers, providing in-service training for existing teachers and sharing cost-effective and locally appropriate strategies to improve the management of schools.
