More than 20 years ago, AKFC helped pioneer an innovative approach to rural poverty alleviation in one of the poorest parts of the world – Northern Pakistan. Working with community-based organizations, AKFC and its partners took a holistic approach that empowered individuals, including women, and tapped local resources to help communities become self-sufficient. Since then, Rural Support Programs have been adapted successfully in very different environments, from Afghanistan to Mozambique. Example After 15 years of post-Soviet independence, the people of isolated and resource poor Gorno Badakshan region of Tajikistan are still struggling to rebuild basic services such as health care and education, while farming small, rugged plots of land. Smart Solution Democratic and self-reliant village organizations established under the Mountain Societies Development Support Program allow people to pool their resources and manage development according to their needs. Increased agricultural production and new democratic structures are acting as a catalyst for broader social and economic development. Learn more about AKFC's Smart Solutions | |
