Example

With the end of state socialism in Zanzibar, Tanzania, responsibility for the planning and financing of development shifted from the government to communities. However, the people have little experience in finding funding or lobbying for desperately-needed projects such as schools and roads.

Smart Solution

The NGO Resource Centre – Zanzibar has increased grassroots involvement in community development planning. Through training programs, the centre has improved the effectiveness of community-based organizations and helped create an environment in which citizens have a voice in the process of development.
