Bridges that Unite is a traveling, interactive exhibition about the many ways in which Canada, in partnership with the AKDN, has helped search for solutions to some of the world's most critical issues.
Count Down to Walk 2009 :
Health

Despite unprecedented advances in global health, citizens of the developing world continue to suffer from entirely preventable diseases. And in many places access to affordable drugs and health care, safe water and sanitation is limited. AKFC-supported programs work to bring sustainable improvements in health care to especially vulnerable groups, such as women and children, while strengthening professional health care systems.

Example

Draught and over-use of groundwater for agriculture in Gujurat, in Western India have depleted water resources and contaminated available drinking water. Collecting water places a particularly heavy burden on women and girls. Sanitation systems installed in the past have been under-maintained and fallen into disuse. e

Solution

The Gujurat Health Improvement Program is increasing water availability and quality by involving the local community – particularly women – in the planning and maintenance of water and sanitation systems. This along with health and hygiene education has contributed to a significant decline in waterborne diseases. GEHIP is the State government’s partner of choice in water management programs.
