Sifa Rodrigues
Mozambique
Communities in the isolated Cabo Delgado province of northern Mozambique have poor access to health care and suffer from high child mortality rates. Ravaged by two decades of conflict and virtually cut off from the rest of the country, communities in this area are now working together to identify their development priorities. With Canadian support, volunteers are managing rural health posts where mothers of childbearing age, like Sifa, receive particular attention. Health workers provide information on hygiene and nutrition as well as vaccinations and bed-nets to curb diseases like malaria and measles, both prevalent in this area.
