Mohammed Amin
Egypt

Mohammed Amin makes lanterns in his workshop in Darb al Ahmar, a poor neighbourhood in Cairo's Old City.

Unemployment in Mohammed's neighborhood is 16%, and the illiteracy and school drop-out rates are both above the national average, as children often leave school early to support their families. But thanks to funds raised by the World Partnership Walk, local residents are gaining a foothold in the re‐birth of the local economy.

Vocational training, business development and financial services are providing new opportunities for workers and entrepreneurs, helping poor families preserve their heritage and improve their neighbourhood. Mohammed has accessed several loans to help grow his business. With his latest loan, he opened a high- profile shop in a busy tourist area.
