Dear Friends,

Bem vindo! It is a pleasure to welcome you to Mozambique.

While COVID-19 has impacted everyone around the world, the effects we each have felt are not equal. As with most crises, women, girls, and marginalized groups have disproportionately borne the weight of the pandemic’s negative impacts. These inequalities hold generations back and stand in the way of a brighter future for all.

But breaking barriers takes time. Alongside local partners, Aga Khan Foundation Canada has been actively engaged in Mozambique for 20 years, empowering women and girls through capacity building, civil society strengthening, and improving access to health, finance, and education.

The pandemic has only emphasized the importance of ensuring this work continues in the days, weeks, and even years ahead. Investing in our youth, women, and girls today has the power to transform communities for the better and lift entire generations up.

Thank you for your continued support.

Estamos juntos. Together, we can make a difference.

Mozambique and Canada

Aga Khan Foundation Canada has been in Mozambique since the early 2000s, beginning with rural development programs that supported capacity building, infrastructure, civil society, microfinance, and savings groups.

Since then, AKFC’s programs have expanded to include agriculture and food security, civil society, and health and nutrition, with the aim of improving quality of life for Mozambicans, with a focus on women and children. By partnering with local communities to harness the potential of Mozambique’s natural resources and youthful population, we can support inclusive and sustainable development for all.

Imagining Possibilities

For adolescents in Mozambique, youth health centres are one of the few safe spaces where young women and men can ask questions and get reliable information about their health and well-being. When youth are empowered to make informed health decisions, they and their families typically go on to lead healthier, happier lives. With Canadian support, facilities like this one in Montepuez are growing to accommodate the needs of young Mozambicans.
